As general manager of the largest community youth recreation organization in Anne Arundel County, Jim oversees programs involving more than 5,000 youngsters who participate in eleven different sports. He manages facilities used by the Green Hornets, including the five fields and the pavillion at Kinder Park, and the fields at Cypress Creek, Shipley's Choice and St. Martin's-in-the-Field Church. He is also the liaison with Anne Arundel County Department of Recreation and Parks and is the bookkeeper.
As the liaison between between the Green Hornets and the county, Jim files permit requests for field use and keeps the master schedule for not only the Green Hornets teams but any county and club organizations using the fields. He also coordinates with the county the maintenance of the Severna Park Middle School Fields.
With an annual budget in excess of $500,000, the job is enormous. It is equivalent to a small corporation, and Jim has the training for the job. Jim's bookkeeping responsibilities are enormous. A graduate of the College of William and Mary, he worked as an accountant for T.Rowe Price for two years. When the opportunity with the Green Hornets came along he jumped at it. "I've always been involved with athletics," he explained. "I played baseball in high school and college. This job gives me an opportuinty to coach and work with kids. I'm outside and not sitting behind a desk working on a computer every day."
Outside is where you'll find Jim a great deal of the time. During the height of the season, there are between 40 and 50 games per week at Kinder Park alone. Jim works an average of 50 hours per week and loves every minute of it because he knows he is making a difference.
